In 'Why the Center Does Not Hold', Richard Pildes pretty much concluded that the hyper-polarization that we're seeing may be the natural maturation of our form of democracy.
99 point something or other of all species that ever existed are now extinct...why should our species be different? I think the only thing that distinguishes our species from others is our ability to delude ourselves into thinking that we are special.
I know this is a very jaded consideration, but I think it needs be entertained.

Loved the parallels to the Russian Empire. Something that's not mentioned nearly enough.
I lived in Russia for one brutal winter in 2009-2010. And in Estonia as well. So I think about Russia & the Cold War often.
